China-Spec vs Global-Spec Toyota C-HR: What International Dealers Should Know
How the China-market Toyota C-HR built by GAC Toyota differs from versions sold elsewhere: 2.0L engines, LHD only, infotainment, documentation and warranty.
The Toyota C-HR has been sold in many regions, but each market gets its own engines, equipment and certification. The C-HR we export was built by GAC Toyota for China. Knowing how it differs helps you price it correctly and answer your customers' questions.
Which engines does the China-spec C-HR use?
Only 2.0-litre units: the M20A/M20C petrol engine with 126 kW (171 PS) and a CVT, and from 2021 the M20F-based 2.0L hybrid with 135 kW combined. Versions sold in other regions have used different engines, such as smaller turbocharged petrol units or 1.8-litre hybrids. If your customers search for those, explain that the China-spec car has the larger 2.0L engine.
Is the China-spec C-HR available in right-hand drive?
No. China drives on the right, so every China-market C-HR is left-hand drive. That suits LHD markets across the Middle East, CIS, North and West Africa and Latin America, but rules out RHD markets.
How does the infotainment differ?
- Phone mirroring includes China-specific systems such as CarLife and HiCar. CarPlay is listed on 2022 and 2023 models, not on earlier years.
- Built-in navigation and connected services on some trims were designed for Chinese map and network services and may not work abroad; most export buyers use phone navigation instead.
- Screen languages depend on the head unit software. Ask sales about language options for specific units.
What about emissions and certification?
China-spec C-HRs are certified to China V or China VI emission standards (2018 models were built in both versions; 2020 onward are China VI). Your destination may require its own conformity assessment. Check with the relevant authority — our market notes list them — before ordering.
Does the warranty transfer?
Generally not. China-market factory warranties are issued for domestic customers. Plan local servicing, and agree any after-sales support on the proforma invoice.
Why do dealers still choose the China-spec C-HR?
- A recognised Toyota product with a larger 2.0L engine than many other markets' versions.
- Good standard equipment on later years: Toyota Safety Sense, LED headlights and 8 airbags.
- Supply of recent used units at competitive prices, with documents prepared for export.
